Located in the Municipality of Beberibe, 100 km from Fortaleza, the wind farm represents an investment of more than USD 260 million.
On August 20, 209, IMPSA, a leading company in the development of renewable energies in Latin America, and CEMIG, one of the largest and most important electric energy utilities in Brazil, inaugurated the “Praias de Parajuru” wind farm in the Municipality of Beberibe, 103 km from Fortaleza.
This Project, the first of a series of three wind farms to be set up in the State of Ceará, represents an investment of some USD 260 million.
The 325-hectare wind farm is equipped with nineteen 1.5 MW wind generators manufactured at IMPSA’s own plant, which was inaugurated in September 2008 in Puerto de Suape in Pernambuco.
The other two wind farms, Praia do Morgado (374 ha) and Volta do Rio (377 ha), are both located in the Municipality of Acarau, 250 km from Fortaleza. Together, the three wind parks of Ceará will have a total installed capacity of 99.6 MW and will create –during the implementation phase– some 7600 direct and indirect jobs.
According to Luis Pescarmona, IMPSA’s CEO in Brazil, the project is part of the company’s strategy to increase investments in renewable energies in that country. Mr. Pescarmona also stated that “IMPSA considers Brazil a key market. Our long-term strategy involves not only equipment manufacture and power generation but also technology development. Our vision is to play a leading role in the development of a more balanced and cleaner energy matrix with projects throughout the country. We are confident that winds of growth are blowing for us and for Brazil”.
IMPSA is currently working on the implementation of 10 wind farms with a 217 MW installed capacity in the State of Santa Catarina. A USD 620 million investment is planned for 2009.
The wind farms are part of Brazil’s Program of Incentives for Alternative Electricity Sources - PROINFA, which the company leads with a 22% participation –a fact that makes it the largest developer and builder of wind farms in Brazil.
